Lovely little fragments,

Beautiful short poems,

like beauties with captivating cheeks,

Like women with enchanting cheeks;

كأنهن الغواني

كأنهن الغواني

يمسن في يوم عيد

يمسن في يوم عيد

as though they were fair maidens

As though they were beautiful women

swaying along on a feast day;

Swaying as they walk on a festival day,

أو خاطرات الأماني

أو خاطرات الأماني

يزرن قلب عميد

يزرن قلب عميد

or fleeting thoughts of wishes

Or fleeting fancies of hope

visiting a love-stricken heart.

Visiting a lovesick heart.

ما أجحد القلب إن لم

يحيّها بالسجود

يحيّها بالسجود

How cold the heart, if it does not

How ungrateful is the heart, if it does not

salute them with prostration!

Greet them with prostration!

وأظلم الدهر إن لم

يجد لها بالخلود

يجد لها بالخلود

And how unjust is Time, if it does not
