وقفتI stood أحيّىI salute معشريmy fellows وبنيand the sons of ودّيmy affection
In fulfillment of my pledge, or [in keeping] with my promise,
To fulfill my covenant or fade in my promise
I stood to salute my fellows and the sons of my affection.
I stood to greet my friends and those I love
وقفتI stood أحييI salute عصبةًa band عربيةًArab

I stood to salute an Arab band,
I stood to greet an Arab nation
Through whom we truly discern the right path and seek guidance.
Through which we discern right from wrong and find guidance

وأهلاand welcome بكمto you عندin the presence of المسرةjoy أوor عنديin my presence
So welcome to you in the garden of love and purity,
Welcome to the garden of love and purity
And welcome in joy's company, or in mine.
Welcome when happy or when visiting me

بهin him مثلthe like of ماwhat بيin me منof أنينgroaning ومنand of سهدsleeplessness
And in al-Rustamiyya a poet stirred me,
A poet stirred me in Rustamiya
In him, as in me, are groans and sleeplessness.
With the same passions inside me and the same yearning
بهin him منfrom هوىlove for ليلىLayla رسيسٌa lingering trace منof الهوىpassion

In him is a lingering trace of passion from love for Layla,
With a burning desire for Layla kindled from passion
And in me is an unquenchable flame from love for Hind.
And within me a flame that will not quench from love of Hind
أماناًsafety لهاfor her منfrom داءthe sickness of وجدىmy yearning فإننيfor indeed I
أخافI fear عليهاfor her أنthat داءthe sickness of الهوىlove يعدىis contagious
May she be safe from the sickness of my yearning, for I
I promised her safety from my love-sickness for I fear
Fear for her, lest love's sickness infect her.
The malady of passion may prove contagious

And in his song he reminded me of the days of youth.
And his song reminded me of the days of my youth
Peace upon the days of youth in the hills of Najd.
Peace upon the days of youth in the highlands of Najd

His love is a visitor upon the banks of the Tigris,
His love is for the banks of the Tigris
But my heart's love belongs to the Nile and the Wafd.
While mine is for the Nile and the Upper Egypt
فلاso do not تحسبوهthink him شاردنwandering الذهنin mind وحدهby himself
ولاand do not تحسبونيthink me سادراًwandering heedlessly فيin الهوىlove وحديby myself
So do not think he alone is absent-minded,
Think not his mind alone has wandered
Nor think that I alone wander heedlessly in love.
Nor think I am drunken in passion all by myself
شهيدانtwo martyrs هذاthis one للترائيfor gazing عينهُhis eye
وآخرand another مطلولُshed unavenged الوريدthe vein علىupon الزندthe forearm
Two martyrs: this one's eye is for gazing,
Two martyrs - one with his eyes set on apparitions
And another, his vein's blood shed unavenged upon his forearm.
The other with loosened veins from the dagger's blade
قتيلانtwo slain إماeither منfrom لقاءa meeting مفاجئsudden
أتيحwas made possible وإماor else منfrom لقاءa meeting علىby وعدan appointment
Two slain—either by a sudden meeting
Both slain - one from an unforeseen encounter
That was made possible, or by an arranged meeting.
The other from a planned and promised tryst
فإماso either قتيلٌone slain منfrom جنىthe harvest of الشهدhoney يشتكىhe complains

So either a slain man complains of honey's harvest,
One a martyr who complains of the wounds of sweet honey
Or one laid low complains of the harvest of roses.
The other a slain man who complains of the stings of roses

O you laid low by beauties, do not blame me, for I
Slain by melodies - blame me not for I
Am laid low by Umm Kulthum's songs, not by Da'd.
Am slain by the songs of Oum Kalthoum that heal no wound
