I remembered my days, when you were my beloveds,

And you were the flutter of blossoms in the dream of my dreams.

    I remembered that I—did I remember? If only I

Would remember my days with you, and my sins.

Years we spent, while love had its rapture,

Have we parted? Ah, how they dispersed—

The breezes we fashioned from wine and the goblet!

    O Christmas night,

    O night of unveiling,

    I have a rendezvous

    With my sweet maiden.

If a festival passes and I behold no gleam of hers,

Then the festival is a night, faithless to its pledge, cruelly unjust.

    We parted, parted,

    And choked on wishes.

    Do not remember the days,

    Do not remember the dreams.

The night of nights, lying in wait for lovers.

Are you returning? Answer me—will you return?

Are you returning? Answer me, O wayward one.

Every day of our estrangement bestows

The sweet torment from this song.

The glance of your eyes is nectar within nectar.

How can I sober from my passion and regain my senses?

    This countenance, of such beauty,

Is light of enchantment and coquetry.

Is my heart's passion forbidden or permitted?

    Christmas night—this is your night.

And the heart's blaze within it is your cheek.

You are jealous of my passion for you, O sweet one,

Just as day denies the night.

    And overpowering passion is scheming and aversion;

It is the uproar in the night of gambling.

We pass the days, the days of passion,

    In quarrels, reproaches, and blame.

Then I ask you to give me a cup of peace,

So you give me tales of passion to drink.

You are angry—what is the secret of this anger?

You are playful—and how sweet the play

Of a gazelle enraptured by my songs.

Indeed, my poetry of you is from the melody of eternity.

And the cheek's juice comes from the fire of iron.

I sang you poetry from my soul, and soared with it

    With the angels on Tuesday.

It is a day near—so near.

For a beloved whom a lover desires.

You are my dawn and my evening.

O my nighttime companion in imagination.

    I am ill with longing,

    O beauty within beauty.

Helwan keeps you far from me, and she is unjust.
