Do not mention Najd or al-Khayf after her:

Her haunts have risen above al-Khayf or Najd.

My country, was love a light over which rose

    Clouds of ingratitude and denial?

I stood alone, oppressed: I have no brothers,

Nor companions whose fellowship strengthens my arm.

I stood alone: no friend to whom I might pour out my complaint,

Nor beloved kept awake by my sleeplessness.

When vile time weighs me down with harshness,

Its people turn against me, a fiercely contentious band.

Alone? No: sorrow keeps lions company

In their solitude amid the darkness of bare dunes.

Let my age do what it wishes: it will see

Only an arm meeting it with steadfast might.

He who builds towering mountains built me,

And no fortress raised by God can be demolished.

What ails people whose reason has collapsed,

Who oppose the builder of mountains without support [reading uncertain]?

They muster valiant troops to fight me,

Not knowing that I shall meet them alone.

When a fighter draws strength from almighty God,

He humbles thousands of oppressive soldiers.

My beloveds in Heliopolis, what was it

That prompted you to muddy that watering place of yours?

An age ungenerous with gifts bestowed it, yet you were

More miserly than time, itself accused of withholding bounty.

My passion gave you drink and quenched your thirst, yet I found

No helper against the stumbling blows of time and passion.

Nights or weeks pass, and I see,

For all my ardor, only promises that avail nothing.

I excused my beloveds who are prevented

By far-flung deserts from keeping their promises.

I excused those in al-Karkh whose homes lay far away:

They cannot do without patience's safeguard.

But what is your patience, when between me and you

Are easy steps that can be counted?

    وإن وسوس الهتاف أمسيتُم عندي

    When the telephone rings, I am with you in the morning;

And if the telephone whispers, you are with me in the evening.

With five digits dialed, I see you,

And you see me—how little effort that requires!

Come, and do not heed the words of an adviser

Who speaks free words from a slave's mind.

Some people's advice is masked deceit,

And some people's concern is a form of hatred.

I have known my age through its children; whoever dwells

In hunger outstrips the philosophers of India.

Shall we hear the haters' prattle, yet fail to heed

The roar of beauty's intoxication, counseling passion?

It is beauty: let it command whatever it wishes, and let

Its will prevail; we are its most obedient troops.

We have heard: whoever beauty calls will listen.

Indeed, beauty's whisper is a melody from eternity.

Come: the times of serenity are passing,

And no time we have wasted can return.

Come quickly; do not say, 'Until tomorrow':

Tomorrow, to true yearning, is an age of separation.

Otherwise, in Heliopolis there are stars,

Shining, hoping that my affection may be theirs.

Did Baghdad in al-Rashid's reign exhale

A sweeter fragrance than her breaths in my time?
