    Fingers—what are these fingers? Truly, I

    surely deem them poetry that burst forth from my heart.

    فإن كنت أهواها فمن حبها حبي

    Delicate beauties fashioned from beauty and enchantment;

    so if I adore them, my love springs from loving them.

    I sang love verses about them, while they knew nothing of my anguish,

    nor knew the ardor kindled by the lovesick lover’s longing.

    I yearn for them as they bear a ring

    of diamond that enchants the eyes and takes them captive.

    Whenever my soul recalls them, my breast is lost in rapture,

    and love’s delusions whisper to my mind.
