And literature was nothing but choice pieces
Eloquence was but gleanings of poetry,
Of poetry, or prose deemed fine.
Or whatever fine prose there was.

Then al-Mahdi brought it forth, a tender virgin,
Al-Mahdi presented it a virgin,
Swaying beneath her jewels in green robes.
Who snuggled under jewellery in green robes.

Studies—had Zuhayr fed upon some of them,
Discussions - if Zuhair had fed on some -
His rhymes would have grown subtler than magic.
His rhymes would be more magical than sorcery.

And had the blessed Nile understood their essence,
If the Nile, blessed as it is, knew their essence,
It would have turned that mixture into wine.
It would turn that blend into wine.

And had grim Time lent an ear to some of them,
If grim Fate allowed some,
The days would have worn smiles upon their lips.
Days would smile, laughing.

And had Egypt, whom we would ransom, known their worth,
If ransomed Egypt knew their worth,
She would have spent the night on embers for what eloquence suffers.
Eloquence would spend the night on embers.

علىdespite طولthe long duration of ماwhat لاقىendured البيانeloquence منof الهجرneglect
So, O peerless one, through whose merit eloquence grew mighty,
O You, One, eloquence owes its glory to Him -
Despite the long neglect that eloquence endured,
However long eloquence endured estrangement!

Because of your absence, a fierce fire burns in my entrails,
Being away from You is in my heart a bright fire
Tearing pieces from my liver and eating away at my breast.
That cracks my liver and eats at my chest.

علىat حينa time when لاno غوثٌhelp يؤمّلis hoped for منfrom حرa noble man
I bore it—God knows—against my will,
I have endured it - God knows - perforce
At a time when no help could be hoped for from a noble man.
While no help could be hoped for from heat.

And when I saw that patience was of no use to me,
When I saw endurance was no use to me
I turned to my sorrow, making my verse bear it.
I set to my worries and made them my poetry.
