بربك هل أبقيت للناس نتفةً

بربك هل أبقيت للناس نتفةً

من الفضل أم آثرت نفسك بالحسن

من الفضل أم آثرت نفسك بالحسن

By your Lord, have you left people a shred

My lord, have you left any generosity

Of excellence, or favored yourself with beauty?

For people, or have you chosen yourself with beauty?

فإني أراهم يبتغون إلى العلا

فإني أراهم يبتغون إلى العلا

مسالك لا تهدى اللبيب ولا تغنى

مسالك لا تهدى اللبيب ولا تغنى

For I see them seeking, toward the heights,

For I see them seeking the heights

Paths that neither guide the discerning nor avail.

By ways that do not guide the intelligent nor enrich.

هو الأزهر المعمور ضم شتاتنا

هو الأزهر المعمور ضم شتاتنا

فمن تابع للسالفين ومفتن

فمن تابع للسالفين ومفتن

It is flourishing al-Azhar that gathered our scattered ranks:

It is the most populated flower that gathered us.

So some follow the predecessors, while others innovate.

So whoever followed the ancients and was tempted,

حسبنا العلا وقفا على كل مقتد

حسبنا العلا وقفا على كل مقتد

فضعنا وضيّعنا الكمال على الذهن

فضعنا وضيّعنا الكمال على الذهن

We thought eminence the exclusive preserve of every follower,

It was enough for us to stand on every imitator.

So we went astray, and denied the mind perfection.

Thus we lost and wasted perfection upon the mind.

وقد عرف الأسلاف قيمة عقلهم

وقد عرف الأسلاف قيمة عقلهم

فباتوا على علمٍ وبتنا على ظنّ

فباتوا على علمٍ وبتنا على ظنّ

And indeed, our forebears knew the worth of their intellect,

And the ancients knew the value of their mind.

So they rested on knowledge, while we rested on conjecture.

So they spent the night with knowledge while we spent the night with assumption.

أعذنى من أهل الخمول فإنني

أعذنى من أهل الخمول فإنني

أرى قربهم يدعون الشجاع إلى الجبن

أرى قربهم يدعون الشجاع إلى الجبن

Protect me from the indolent, for I

Save me from the people of laziness, for I

See, in their company, how they call the brave to cowardice.

See that being near them invites the brave to cowardice.

ولا تنسنى من فضل نصحك لحظةً

ولا تنسنى من فضل نصحك لحظةً

فلست عن النصح الجميل بمستغن

فلست عن النصح الجميل بمستغن

And do not neglect me for a moment in your gracious counsel,

And do not forget me from the generosity of your advice for a moment,

For I cannot do without good counsel.

For I am not self-sufficient without good advice.
