Between me and you lie hours that, however many,
Between you and I, there are hours
will not keep us apart beyond midmorning on Sunday.
If they increase, they will not add distance from the morning of Sunday

I spent two days in anguish and resentment,
I spent two days in distress and fever
saying: I shall be poetry's king the day after tomorrow.
I say I am the king of poetry after tomorrow

When I see you yearning, with a thirst
If I look at you longing and thirsty
for my nectar, I see sovereignty at my hand's command.
To my nectar I see the king obedient to my hand

My pangs for you, which I wrestle with, never cease.
Your sorrows in me do not cease their origins
Try to escape, O gazelle, from the lion.
Try to save yourself, oh gazelle, from the lion

Yours are the sweet songs from my poetry and its rapture.
For you are the melodies from my poetry and its intoxication
Yours are the draughts from my soul and from my body.
For you are the cups from my soul and from my body

When I embrace you, the whole universe surges,
If I hold you while the universe thunders all around
as winds surge in the heart of the singing nightingale.
The winds roar in the heart of the singing nightingale

I fear an ember in the cheek that tempts me;
I fear a burning ember on the cheek that seduces me
indeed, I seek refuge in this One, the Self-Sufficient.
I take refuge in this One, Eternal God
