And accept death as my draught,

And be content with consoling words

while another's draught is sweet?

While others enjoy roses?

وأرضى باللظى مثوى

ووجهك جنة الخلد

ووجهك جنة الخلد

And accept the blaze as my abode,

And settle for an illusory refuge

while your face is the paradise of eternity?

وفيّا حافظا أشقى

ليسعد ناقض العهد

ليسعد ناقض العهد

Shall I suffer, loyal and keeping faith,

And make myself miserable

so that a pledge-breaker may rejoice?

So the oath-breaker prospers?

وصبّا والها أفنى

ليبقى جاحد الود

ليبقى جاحد الود

And perish, lovesick and distraught,

Shall I waste myself away

so that one who denies affection may live on?

So the ungrateful endure?

فيا ويلاه من حبّ

حملت بلاءه وحدى

So, woe is me for a love

Oh woe is the love

whose affliction I have borne alone!

That has burdened me alone!

أعدّ لحمله جهدى

أعدّ لحمله جهدى

فيصعق بطشه جهدى

فيصعق بطشه جهدى

I muster my strength to bear it,

I prepare my strength

then its onslaught strikes my strength down.

To bear it, but am overwhelmed.
