أجبنيanswer me إنif تفضلتَyou would be so kind
علىtoward المسكينthe poor soul بالردِّwith a reply
Answer me, if you would favor
Answer me, if you would,
this poor soul with a reply.
With kindness, poor wretch that I am,
أأنسىshall I forget? الدهرforever ماwhat جادتgave generously
بهwith it عيناكyour two eyes منof وعدa promise
Shall I forever forget what was lavished
Shall I forget what your eyes
by your eyes in promise,
Promised with their generous glow?
وأرسمand I draw للمنىfor hopes حداًa limit
وماwhile there is no لجوايfor my burning heartache منany حدّlimit
and set a limit to my hopes,
Shall I restrict my hopes
though my burning heartache has no limit?
Though my passions have no bounds?
واقنعand I am content بالردىwith death ورداًas a draught
وغيريwhile someone other than me سائغdrinking with ease الوردthe draught
And shall I be content with death as my draught,
Shall I be content with ashes though others enjoy the flames?
while another drinks his draught with ease?
Shall I make my home in the waste
وأرضىand I accept باللظىwith blazing fire مثوىas a dwelling
ووجهكwhile your face جنةparadise الخلدeternity
And shall I accept blazing fire as my dwelling,
Though your face is paradise?
while your face is eternal paradise?
Shall I call a traitor friend
I suffer
ليسعدَso that he may be happy ناقضُbreaker العهدthe pledge
Faithful and true, must I suffer
So a breaker of vows may prosper?
so that the breaker of the pledge may be happy?
Shall I worship the blind
وصبّاand lovesick والهاًmaddened with love أفنىI perish
ليبقىso that he may live on جاحدُdenier الودaffection
And lovesick, maddened with love, must I perish
So the ingrate may endure?
so that one who denies affection may live on?
Woe to a love whose pain I've borne alone!
فياso, O ويلاهُwoe is me! منbecause of حبٍّa love
حملتI bore بلاءهُits torment وحدىby myself
So, woe is me for a love
I ready my strength for its burden,
whose torment I bore alone!
Then its might overwhelms my strength.
أعدُّI prepare لحملهِto bear it جهدىmy strength
فيصعقthen it strikes down بطشهits violence جهدىmy strength
I muster my strength to bear it,
then its violence strikes my strength down.
