وجنّ عليّ الليلُ حتى حسبتهُ

وجنّ عليّ الليلُ حتى حسبتهُ

جفاء كريمٍ أو رجاء لئيم

And night fell upon me until I thought it

The night frowned at me as if

A noble man's coldness, or hope placed in a base man.

It were the aloofness of a generous man or the vain hopes of a wretch
