    A sight wondrous in beauty, awe-inspiring,

    like the tumult of passions within my ribs.

    صرخات المتيّم المفجوع

    Thunderclaps in which nature cries out

    the cries of the grief-stricken lover;

    and the sky’s tears, from every quarter,

    leap forth like a raincloud of my tears.

    And lightning flashes, as though they were glimmers

    from the whispered converse of Dhukāʾ (the sun) at her rising.

    أوقدي يا سماء نور الشموع

    Rain, O sky, in every [land?—word truncated];

    kindle, O sky, the light of candles.

    ساقه اللَه رحمةً للجميع

    Every good thing from the sky is beautiful;

    God has brought it as a mercy for all.

    of what I endure to the Near One, the All-Hearing.

    This roar has terrified, O sender of lightning,

    goblets I mended with my own fractures.

    I lent this sky,

    within her weeping eye,

    rare treasures of song

    from my lamenting heart.

    Love for love, and hopes and valleys,

    where one rapturous in spirit rises, overjoyed.

    إن الحمائم أشكال وألوان

    In every garden we have a bird we adore;

    indeed, doves come in many forms and colors.

    For every songbird I have—and love is rapture—

    a frame drum, an oud, a lyre, and a ringing instrument.
