A letter like the garden's blossoms—nay, fresher still.

And a breath like the breath of dawn—nay, more enchanting.

I received it, my heart fluttering, while love's anguish

Was an ember blazing in the depths of my soul.

A letter that came after agonizing despair,

And intoxicated a soul that grows drunk on ardent love.

Is this your handwriting, or the trills of jinn,

Whose lines lie in the book of love and revelation?

Were it not for the heart's fluttering at its arrival,

I would have said the handwriting was forged.

I love you with a love whose like love has never seen,

And love has known ages and eras in this world.

Varied forms of beauty circle a lover,

And he clasps them by night—for night conceals best.

When we drink together upon the heights of passion,

I captivate you; through longing, the yearning lover captivates.

To your radiant beauty I send a sigh,

    Fragrant of breath, enjoining patience.

I endured a love whose trials seared me,

And the lovesick, yearning lover may be seared, yet endure.
