    in thought, and a writer—the second orator—

    وما ذاك حلّ بالإخوان

    you ask me about the calamity of modern literature

    and what it was that befell the brethren.

    فسمعاً لما يلي من بياني

    And if there is no escape from replying,

    then listen to my explanation that follows:

    You are not unaware of the threat that came

    recently from the aided emir;

  8. والمقال الذي تفجر ناراً

    and the speech that burst into flame

    against the sons of the age, defiant and near alike;

    في مقام يجل عن هذيان

    and the sword to which he pointed

    in a setting too dignified for ravings;

  10. واليمين التي سمعت صداها

    لتخرّ الرؤوس للأذقان

    and the oath whose echo you heard:

    that heads would surely fall upon their chins;

    يحرق الكتب فيه بالنيران

    وبهذا الفرار نيل الأماني

    There is no remedy but flight,

    and through this flight, hopes are attained.
