O critic, leave me with passion, for now my heart is filled with youth
My heart has become filled with passionate longing.

Neither passionate love is forbidden nor affection a sin,
Until I find solace from the beloved with harmony
That I should turn from the beloved to the solace of forgetting.

For love has a beauty that makes me completely besotted
Into love by his beauty, and has become distraught.

And al-Sa'd in rhetoric, and Hassan in eloquence.

The great scholar of this age—nay, an imam as well,
Truly the sultan of all scholars
In truth, for all the learned—and their sovereign.
