What a goodly town, in land and people alike!

And the plantings of goodness added to its splendor and beauty.

And rain poured down far and wide, so the plantings grew and rose tall,

With swaying branches that carpet the garden with shade.

So my forefathers' olive trees rejoiced, to right and left.

And the clusters hung down, so we picked them by the basketful.

And the meadows of goodness, from an ear of grain, overflowed with harvests.

And from them we have gathered jars of honey, pure and clear.

An all-encompassing light shone forth, spreading across plains and mountains.

When, then, will it become a full moon? It is still a crescent.

O flutter of light, light after light comes in succession,

In tranquil souls that have become adorned with virtues.

They counter an idea with an idea—opinion, not wrangling.

So, through argument, you made the mind an arena and a contest.

Your sword is wisdom, and 'Read!' was a spear and arrows.

So congratulations to you on a victory won without battle.

O youths who left talk and chatter in the forum,

And turned it into deeds while in the flower of their youth.

So you see Suhayb among them, and you see Bilal among them.

Whenever it was said they had died down, they sprang up and made it blaze all the more.

May God lend radiance to faces and foreheads that gleam.

We have seen them rise above finery and soar higher.

So congratulations to a land that has brought forth such men.
