When they keep to themselves, they are mighty kings;
When they withdraw, they are proud kings,
and in war, allies of merciless death.
Yet in war, they are fierce allies of doom.

They have radiant faces, finely patterned in battle,
They have faces, pale as the moon, glowing in battle
as though the hands of embroiderers had overspread them.
As if veiled by hands that wield swords.

As though the wounds of thrusts and blows, in their beauty,
It seems the wounds of their stabs and blows are joys
were dirham engravings upon radiant cheeks.
Etched on their pale cheeks like coins’ engravings.
