    O raincloud, and bestower

of downpours on him who asks it for rain,

    استُسقِيَ العارض طَلا

    when, if asked for rain,

    a raincloud gives not even a drizzle;

    هِ العِدا سَبياً وَقَتلا

a commander whose campaigns have annihilated

the foes by capture and killing.

Indeed, a guest who sought you out, to whom you said

    'Welcome, and be at ease,'

for whom you have been lavish with

what delights a guest as hospitality,

    has no bedding on the

earth except the surface of a prayer mat.

As for me, were it not for patient endurance

that made its rough ground smooth,

my eye would not have found, for sleep,

any kohl in the wretched lodging.
