In him you see what adorns greatness,

and in others you behold disgrace within it.

Whenever they part with a dirham out of necessity,

they set women wailing over it, though lawfully spent,

just as Abd Allah holds, every night,

a musical gathering for what he bestowed that day.

With a mind from which fire itself seems to have sprung,

and fine composure that balances a mountain, yet outweighs it.

He is nothing but the sea in knowledge and bounty,

though he has this added merit: he is not salty.

And whoever attempts to describe all that is in him

is like one who attempts to cross the sea by swimming.
