وَماand not اِستَلأمواthey donned armor حِرزاfor protection وَلَكنَّbut rather لأمَهُمtheir armor
وَما اِستَلأموا حِرزا وَلَكنَّ لأمَهُم
بُرُودُهُمtheir cloaks فيin المَعرَكِthe battlefield المُتَلاحِمِclose-fought
بُرُودُهُم في المَعرَكِ المُتَلاحِمِ
And they donned no armor for protection; rather, their armor
Was their cloaks in close-fought battle.
فَآبواso they returned بِهاin them سُودَblack الثِّيابِthe garments كَأَنَّهُمas though they
فَآبوا بِها سُودَ الثِّيابِ كَأَنَّهُم
وَقَدand already قَتَلواthey had slain أَعداءَهُمtheir enemies فيin مَآتمِmourning gatherings
وَقَد قَتَلوا أَعداءَهُم في مَآتمِ
So they returned in them, black-clad, as though they,
Having slain their enemies, were at mourning gatherings.
