وَأَبلَقَ مِن شَرطِ الكميِّ لزينةٍ

وَأَبلَقَ مِن شَرطِ الكميِّ لزينةٍ

وَإِحراز ميدانٍ وَيَومِ قِتالِ

وَإِحراز ميدانٍ وَيَومِ قِتالِ

And a piebald steed, among an armored warrior’s requisites for adornment,

More excellent than the black streak of kohl for decoration,

and victory on the racecourse and on a day of battle.

And for winning the battleground and day of fighting,

فَخضرته ثلثٌ وَثلثاه شهبة

فَخضرته ثلثٌ وَثلثاه شهبة

فَأخضر قدّامٍ وَأشهب تالِ

فَأخضر قدّامٍ وَأشهب تالِ

So one third of its coat is dark, and two thirds gray;

Is its greenness a third, and two-thirds grayness.

dark in front, and gray behind.

So it's green in front and gray behind.

لَهُ لببٌ مِن شُهبَةٍ بَينَ دُهمَةٍ

لَهُ لببٌ مِن شُهبَةٍ بَينَ دُهمَةٍ

كَعام صُدودٍ بَعدَ يَومِ وِصَالِ

كَعام صُدودٍ بَعدَ يَومِ وِصَالِ

It has a breastband of gray amid blackness,

It has a flash of grayness between darkness,

like a year of estrangement after a day of union.

Like a year of rainy seasons after a day of union.

تَدَرَّع بَدرَ التِّمِّ نُوراً وَظُلمَةً

تَدَرَّع بَدرَ التِّمِّ نُوراً وَظُلمَةً

وَلُبِّبَ مِن حَيزومِهِ بِهلالِ

وَلُبِّبَ مِن حَيزومِهِ بِهلالِ

It donned the full moon as armor, its light and darkness,

It is armored with the full moon, light and darkness,

and was fitted at the chest with a crescent breastband.

And is clad at its nose with a crescent moon.
