    Does the age of glory gladden you, or does glory rejoice

    in your age, proud, with good fortune as its ascendant?

    فصورتها من رسم افعالهم تبدو

    And days have no honor except through their people;

    so their image emerges from the outlines of their deeds.

    An arena for men's boldness and their excellence,

    toil and effort accompany them in attaining it.

    And a man may rise in glory through his diligence,

    and attain what glory and good fortune cannot attain.

    And a true man is not one who meets Time with resentment,

    while discord and opposition stand before his resolute endeavors.

    For the pursuit of eminence is not easy; rather,

    its sweetness is bitter aloe, and its colocynth is honey.

    And in my experience, it does not fail in promise or fidelity,

    and its covenant is with none but its companion.

    وطابت بهِ نفساً فأيَّامها رغدُ

    It shone forth through him in pride, and its station grew exalted;

    and it was content in spirit through him, so its days were full of ease.

    فما دأبه الاَّ الفضيلة والزهدُ

    Through him we learned men's excellence and their ways;

    for his way is nothing but virtue and asceticism.

    We enumerate his qualities among the noble,

    and chant them proudly, though they are beyond counting.

    فما خاب في عليا مكارمها قصدُ

    In them lie most of my hopes and my ultimate aim;

    for no quest has failed in the heights of their noble virtues.

    أُرامقها رشداً فيسعدني الرشدُ

    I journey through the span of days, keeping their company;

    I look to them for guidance, and right guidance gladdens me.

    For my soul has known no favor but theirs,

    nor recalled any other kindness, nor been enveloped in other bounty.

    May this festival gladden you, for you are its festival,

    and its joys endure in good fortune and honor.

    تزينها العليا ويسعدها المجدُ

    So may your radiant qualities never cease to be a goal;

    eminence adorns them, and glory gladdens them.
