He shrouded wakefulness in vision and wandered lost—

a poet: all wishes are but a part of his own.

pain, whose fruit he presses for the people.

What dawn has not laid to rest a hope

that forged in the night the keys to its worlds?

Ah, how often he stretched a hand toward bliss

and implored it, but it turned away from his plea.

In his world he is like a phantom, and no

thought has embraced him, nor any heart understood him.

His passion lacerated his heart, so he turned away,

lamenting, laying bare his passion to others.

He was deemed a poor soul whom madness had seized,

so he went on, crowding his footsteps in bewilderment.

If only they knew how many a madness

has kindled for the universe the lamp of its guidance!

that intoxicated the soul and whose echo has not faded.

Sing it as an Iliad from Homer

that grew lush, while time has not overtaken his youth.

Sing it as you wish: how many a lyre

has created a god in the world of thought!

    Ask Olympus, from Lebanon, from

the Greeks' playground, about a past it built,

through which works of genius defy

time's onslaught and dictate what it has recounted:

images of conquest never dreamed of by

a commander who planted his banner in victory.

Behold the poet, the emblem of truth in

a world that strayed from truth and wandered lost.

He crucifies his soul to redeem souls

that have sullied their brows in the lust of the senses.
