مقاماًa station سنياًlofty نالهhe attained it كلevery لوذعيkeen-witted person
Remember to reflect, if you lay claim
You claim a glorious rank attained by every pretender
to a lofty station attained by every keen-witted person.
Yet prattle on with flattery to seek what all impostors gained
علاrose بكwith you لجلاجstammering اللسانthe tongue تملقاًin flattery

A stammering tongue bore you aloft through flattery,
I'm stunned by one whose eloquence brought him acclaim
so you might seek what every eloquent orator has attained.
Though piety he scattered to every worthless soul
عجبتI marveled لمنat one who نالattained العلاeminence بفصاحةٍthrough eloquence
وقدand indeed شتتhe scattered التقوىpiety إلىinto كلevery بلقعbarren wasteland
I marvel at one who attained eminence through eloquence,
You learned yet did not act, advised yet were not wise
though he has scattered piety into every barren wasteland.
Preached yet were not devout, hoarded yet did not give
علمتyou knew فلمbut did not تعملact نصحتyou were advised فلمbut did not تصخlisten attentively
وعظتyou were admonished فلمbut did not تصنعact زخرتyou brimmed over فلمbut did not تعunderstand
You knew but did not act; you were advised but did not listen.
You indulged in pleasures, play and passion
You were admonished but did nothing; you brimmed over but did not understand.
So doom shall you meet tomorrow in wretched demise
عكفتyou devoted yourself علىto اللذاتthe pleasures واللهوand diversion والهوىand passion
فلاso there is no بدescape تلقىyou will meet فيin غدٍtomorrow بئسhow wretched مصرعa death
You devoted yourself to pleasures, diversion, and passion;
You fancied you would attain wishes and desires
so tomorrow you will surely meet a wretched death.
But wishes are hard for any claimant to acquire
عزمتyou resolved بزعمby a claim منكfrom you أنto تدركyou attain المنىthe wishes
ونيلand attaining المنىthe wishes صعبdifficult علىfor كلevery مدعيpretender
You resolved, so you claim, to attain your wishes,
Turn from what you gained through eloquence
yet attaining one's wishes is hard for every pretender.
Like recoiling steps in an evil retreat

Your turning away from what you attained through eloquence
Without creation you lost a bargain, o regretful one
is a retreat on your heels to a wretched end.
With guidance you strayed, o evil plight

You came to nothing despite being brought into being—oh, what a losing bargain!
With insight you blinded, o ill-fated darkness
You strayed despite guidance—oh, what a wretched place to land!
Drown in it, then rise by yourself or leave it be

You went blind despite enlightenment—oh, what ill-starred misery
I counted sincere advice, reminding
you have settled in! Rouse yourself, or let it be.
That advice has those who heed and see

I have set out frank counsel for you, reminding you
of a good repentance, for there are those who heed counsel.
