لجناب ذي الإكرام والشرف العلي

والمجد والمعروف طود الكمّل

والمجد والمعروف طود الكمّل

To the honored presence of one endowed with generosity and lofty honor,

With glory and benevolence, a mountain among the accomplished;

الصالح الورع التقيّ المنتقي

الصالح الورع التقيّ المنتقي

بحر العلوم بكل نوع قد مُلي

بحر العلوم بكل نوع قد مُلي

The righteous, scrupulous, devout, discerning one,

An ocean of learning, filled with every kind.

أعني به ذا المكرمات محمداً

أعني به ذا المكرمات محمداً

نجل الزّكي حمود تاج الفضّل

نجل الزّكي حمود تاج الفضّل

By this I mean Muhammad, possessor of noble deeds,

Son of the pure Hamud, crown of the virtuous.

يا رَبّ سلّم ذاته وصفاته

يا رَبّ سلّم ذاته وصفاته

وابقيه في درج الفضائل يعتلي

وابقيه في درج الفضائل يعتلي

O Lord, safeguard his person and his qualities,

And keep him ascending the steps of virtue.

ثم السّلام ورحمة العلام ما

ثم السّلام ورحمة العلام ما

ضاءَ النّهار وما كتاب قد تلي

ضاءَ النّهار وما كتاب قد تلي

Then peace and the All-Knowing’s mercy, as long as

The day shines and a book is read;

ويليهما البركات مع رضوانه

ويليهما البركات مع رضوانه

وهباته دوماً عليك من العلي

وهباته دوماً عليك من العلي

And may blessings follow both, together with His favor,

And His gifts be ever upon you from the Most High.

وإذا سالت عن المحب فشاكر

وإذا سالت عن المحب فشاكر

الله ثمّ عليك يا هذا الولي

الله ثمّ عليك يا هذا الولي

And if you ask about your loving friend, he is thankful

To God, and then to you, O saintly one.

وبأبرك الأوقات وافى طرسكم

وبأبرك الأوقات وافى طرسكم

فأسرّ قلبي ثم ضاء بمنزل

فأسرّ قلبي ثم ضاء بمنزل

And at the most blessed of times your letter arrived;

It gladdened my heart, then shone within the dwelling.

كم بثّ عطراً عند فضّ ختامه

كم بثّ عطراً عند فضّ ختامه

عبق الشذا في طرسه والمنهل

عبق الشذا في طرسه والمنهل

How much perfume it spread when its seal was broken!

Sweet fragrance suffused its page and the wellspring.

فهم المحب جميع ما قد ضمّه

فهم المحب جميع ما قد ضمّه

من نثر درٍّ فائق زاكٍ جلي

من نثر درٍّ فائق زاكٍ جلي

Your loving friend understood all that it held,

Of scattered pearls, exquisite, pure, and bright.

فحمدت ربّ الناس حين قرأته

فحمدت ربّ الناس حين قرأته

ورقصت من طرب بدا بتهلل

ورقصت من طرب بدا بتهلل

So I praised the Lord of humankind when I read it,

And danced for joy that showed in beaming smiles,

لمّا تحقق أنكم يا سيدي

لمّا تحقق أنكم يا سيدي

بأتمّ خير وانبساطٍ أكمل

بأتمّ خير وانبساطٍ أكمل

When it became certain that you, my master,

Were in the fullest well-being and most perfect cheer.

لا زلت عن ذاك الجناب مسائلاً

لا زلت عن ذاك الجناب مسائلاً

من يجيء لنا ومن لم يرحل

من يجيء لنا ومن لم يرحل

I have not ceased asking after that honored presence,

Of whoever comes to us and whoever has not departed.

وسؤالنا يا ذا إليها ورجاؤنا

وسؤالنا يا ذا إليها ورجاؤنا

منك الدعاء محمّد لا تغفل

منك الدعاء محمّد لا تغفل

And our plea and hope, O you, are directed there:

For your prayers, Muhammad—do not neglect them.

واقر السلام قرابةً وصحابةً

واقر السلام قرابةً وصحابةً

منّي وثم جميع من في المنزل

منّي وثم جميع من في المنزل

And convey greetings to kinfolk and companions,

From me, and then to everyone in the house.

وكذا لمن قد شئت فاهديه كذا

وكذا لمن قد شئت فاهديه كذا

من حلّ ساحتكم سلاماً أجمل

من حلّ ساحتكم سلاماً أجمل

And likewise, convey them to whomever you wish; likewise,

To whoever dwells in your courtyard, the fairest greeting.

وعليك منّا يقرؤن سلامهم

وعليك منّا يقرؤن سلامهم

زاكي المكارم شيخنا الشحي علي

زاكي المكارم شيخنا الشحي علي

And from among us, these send you their greetings:

Our sheikh Ali al-Shihhi, pure in noble deeds,

وكذاك يوسف من أشاد بناءها

وكذاك يوسف من أشاد بناءها

يهدي التحية والسلام الأجزل

يهدي التحية والسلام الأجزل

And likewise Yusuf, who raised its edifice,

Sends salutations and the most abundant peace.
