You bestowed affection on us, O House of Wahb,

and it left us prestige and firmly rooted glory.

If anyone's land is a home to sins and humiliation,

then your land is a dwelling for reward and honor.

People saw the measure of your glory surpass glory itself,

so they asked of you more than they used to ask.

All who come after fall short of your striving,

and none who came before has outstripped you.

I have attained what I had hoped for you,

though through you I have not attained what I hope for.

And I have no binding claim, except that I

appeal to your generosity in my need,

and that you have been generous and kind—

and a benefactor may bring his favor to completion.

    فعودوا فإنّ العودَ بالحرّ أجملُ

    And you have done a gracious deed before;

so repeat it, for repetition is more becoming to a noble man.

And many an insistent petitioner has obtained from you what he sought,

yet dignified restraint keeps us from doing likewise.

And you have accustomed us to wealth before we ask,

and no favor is truly given when one's honor must be spent.
