كماjust as غطىcovered علىover الريبsuspicion المريبُthe suspect
I dyed my hair to deceive the fair women,
I dyed my head with henna for the young ladies
As a suspect covers up what arouses suspicion.
As the suspicious one covered over his doubts
أُعلّلُI am consoled مرّةًat one time وأُساءُand I am ill-treated أخرىat another
ولاand not تحصىare counted منfrom الكبَرِold age الذنوبُthe faults
At times I am consoled, at others ill-treated,
I make excuses one time and do wrong another
And the faults of old age are beyond counting.
And from arrogance, sins cannot be counted
أسوّفُI put off توبتيmy repentance خمسينfifty عاماًyears
وظنّيand my belief أنّthat مثليone like me لاnot يتوبُrepents
For fifty years I have put off my repentance,
I delay my repentance fifty years
And I think that one like me will not repent.
And I think the likes of me will not repent

A rod is straightened with a straightening tool while supple,
With culture, our wood is straightened
But a rigid rod will not straighten.
But twisted wood cannot be straightened
