Zaynab visited you by night while the riding camels knelt,

in the southern reaches of Khabt, with dew streaming down,

at the pass of al-‘Alamayn, late at night, after

al-Simak had sunk low and Scorpio had drawn near it.

So greetings and peace to her apparition,

and, with greetings and peace, a welcome.

How did you find your way, and who guided you, when between us lie

Falaj, then the summit of Man‘ij, then al-Marqab?

And you claimed your kin keep you away out of disdain

for me; my kin guard me more jealously and prize me more.

And have I not companions, should you cast me off,

who would care for me, among them one seeking reconciliation?

By your fortune, I am kept from yielding to love’s anguish

by the reason I live by and a heart quick to change.

And I am a son of Zamzam and al-Hatim, and my birthplace

is Mecca’s pebbly valley, while my dwelling is Yathrib.

    فَمَنِ المُشاكِلُ لي إِذا ما أُنسَبُ

    And to Abu Sufyan my descent is traced;

so who is my equal when my lineage is recounted?

And if any living man, through his tribe’s lofty rank,

could enter heaven, I would enter it, never barred.
