The courier came with a letter, trotting along with it.

So the heart felt dread at his letter.

We said, “Woe to you! What is in your letter?”

They said, “By evening the caliph lay stricken and in pain.”

The earth swayed beneath us—or almost swayed—as

though its mighty pillars had been uprooted.

One whose soul keeps rising to a height—

the fates decreed for that soul are soon to befall it.

When I arrived, with the palace gate closed,

at Ramlah’s voice the heart was crushed and split apart.
