And when we met, I found her fingertips

Dyed, like the crimson extract of ʿandam.

So I said, “You dyed your palm after I left—is this how

    A love-crazed, love-enslaved man is repaid?”

Then she spoke—casting love’s searing anguish into my heart—

The words of one who had not grown weary of love:

“I wept blood on the day of parting, and held it back

With my palm; so my fingertips reddened with blood.”

And had I, before her weeping, wept from longing

For Suʿdā, I would have healed my soul before regret.

And yet she wept before me; what moved me to weep

Was her weeping; so I said, “The merit belongs to whoever came first.”
