تَمالىconspired together عَلىagainst النُعمانِal-Nu'man قَومٌa people إِلَيهِمto them
مَوارِدُهُhis comings فيin مِلكِهِhis dominion وَمَصادِرُهand his goings
A people conspired against al-Nu'man—men on whom
his comings and goings in his kingdom depended.
عَلىfor غَيرِno ذَنبٍoffense كانَhad been مِنهُfrom him إِلَيهِمِtoward them
سِوىexcept أَنَّهُthat he جادَتrained bountifully عَلَيهِمupon them مَواطِرُهhis rainclouds
For no offense he had committed against them,
Except that his rainclouds rained bountifully upon them.
فَباعَدَهُمso he kept them far مِنfrom كُلِّevery شَرٍّevil يَخافُهُhe feared it
وَقَرَّبَهُمand he brought them near مِنto كُلِّevery خَيرٍgood يُبادِرُهhe hastened toward it
So he kept them far from every evil he feared,
And brought them near to every good he hastened toward.
فَظَنَّواso they supposed وَأَعراضُand the hazards المَنونِof fate كَثيرَةٌare many
بِأَنَّthat الَّذيwhat قالواthey said مِنَof الأَمرِthe matter ضائِرُهharmful to him
So they supposed—though fate's hazards are many—
That what they said about the matter would harm him.
فَلَمyet did not يَنقُصوهُthey diminish him بِالَّذيby what قيلَwas said شَعرَةًa hair
وَلاnor فُلِّلَتwere blunted أَنيابُهُhis fangs وَأَظافِرُهand his claws
Yet they did not diminish him a hair by what was said,
Nor were his fangs and claws blunted.
وَلَلحارِثُand surely al-Harith الجَفنِيُّal-Jafni أَعلَمُknows best بِالَّذيabout what
يَبوءُhe returns بهwith it النُعمانُal-Nu'man إِنif جَفَّtakes wing طائِرُهhis bird
And surely al-Harith al-Jafni knows best what
al-Nu'man will bring home, should his bird take wing.
فَياso O حارِHarith كَمhow many فيهِمamong them لِنُعمانNu'man's نعمَةًa favor
مِنَof الفَضلِbounty وَالمَنِّand beneficence الَّذيwhich أَناI ذاكِرُهrecounting it
So, O Harith, how many favors al-Nu'man has among them,
Of bounty and beneficence that I recount:
ذُنوباًoffenses عَفاhe pardoned عَنهاthem وَمالاًand wealth أَفادَهُhe bestowed it
وَعَظماًand a bone كَسيراًbroken قَوَّمَتهُset it straight جَوابِرُهhis remedies
Offenses he pardoned, and wealth he bestowed,
And a broken bone his remedies set straight.
وَلَوسالَand if he asked عَنكَabout you الغائِبينَthose absent اِبنُthe son of مُنذِرٍMundhir
لَقالواthey would surely say لَهُto him القَولَthe words الَّذيwhich لاnot يُحاذِرُهhe dreads it
And if the son of Mundhir asked those absent about you,
They would tell him words he would not dread.
