أَعدَدتُI readied سَبحَةَSabḥa (a mare) بَعدَafter ماthat قَرِحَتshe reached maturity
وَلَبِستُand I donned شِكَّةَbattle gear حازِمٍa resolute man جَلدِhardy
I readied Sabḥa once she had reached maturity,
After my rosary broke, I donned the coat of mail of the resolute Hāzim,
and donned the battle gear of a resolute, hardy man.
Our love and intimacy will not be joined together,
لَنwill never تَجمَعواyou combine وُدّيmy friendship وَمَعتَبَتيand my resentment
أَوunless يُجمَعَare brought together السَيفانِthe two swords فيin غِمدِa sheath
You will never combine my friendship and my resentment,
Nor will the two swords be sheathed in one scabbard,
unless two swords are brought together in one sheath.
Nuʿmān, you are a treacherous deceiver,
نُعمانُNuʿmān إِنَّكَindeed you are خائِنٌtreacherous خَدِعٌdeceitful
يُخفيconceals ضَميرُكَyour heart غَيرَother than ماwhat تُبديyou reveal
Nuʿmān, you are treacherous and deceitful;
Your conscience hides something other than what you reveal.
your heart conceals something other than what you reveal.
So if the carving of our idols appears to you,
فَإِذاso if بَداit occurs لَكَto you نَحتُhewing أَثلَتِناour tamarisk
فَعَلَيكُماthen both of you, have at it إِنif كُنتَyou are ذاpossessed of حَردِresolve
So if you think to hew at our tamarisk,
Then it is upon you, if you are a man of valor,
then have at it, both of you, if you have the resolve.
To refuse to allow us to be dignified,
يَأَبىwill not allow لَناfor us أَنّاthat we are ذَووpossessors of أَنَفٍpride
وَأُصولُناand our roots مِنfrom مَحتِدِthe stock of المَجدِglory
Our being men of pride will not permit it,
While our origin is from the giver of glorious deeds.
and our roots spring from the stock of glory.
If you take pride in Al-Kharqāʾ, our family
إِنif تَغرُyou bait بِالخَرقاءِwith a reckless scheme أُسرَتَناour clan
تَلقَyou will meet الكَتائِبَthe battalions دونَناin front of us تَرديthey charge
If you bait our clan with a reckless scheme,
Will meet the battalions before you and repel them.
you will meet battalions charging before us.
Did you think we were flesh for biting?
أَحسِبتَناdid you think us لَحماًmeat عَلىupon وَضَمٍa butcher's block
أَمor خِلتَناyou imagined us فيin البَأسِbattle لاnot نُجديwe are of use
Did you think us meat upon a butcher's block,
Or did you think us feeble in war and unable to help?
or imagine us of no use in battle?
And you plotted against us while we were afflicted,
وَمَكَرتَand you plotted مُعتَلِياًstanding high above مَخَنَّتَناour broad road
وَالمَكرُand scheming مِنكَfrom you عَلامَةُa sign of العَمدِdeliberate intent
And you plotted, overlooking our broad road;
Yet plotting is a sign of your premeditation.
and your scheming is a sign of deliberate intent.
You brandished your sword in order to fight us,
وَهَزَزتَand you brandished سَيفَكَyour sword كَيin order to تُحارِبَناfight us
فَاِنظُرُso consider بِسَيفِكَwith your sword مَنwhom بِهِwith it تُرديyou bring down
And you brandished your sword to fight us;
So look, by your sword, whom do you repel?
so see whom you bring down with your sword.
You desired the plan of the brave Hāzim,
وَأَرَدتَand you sought خُطَّةَa strategy حازِمٍa resolute man بَطَلٍa champion
حيرانَbewildered أَوبَقَهُruined him الَّذيthat which يُسديhe devises
And you sought the strategy of a resolute champion,
Confused about which treacherous one brought it to ruin,
bewildered, undone by the schemes he weaves.
And the path was illuminated for you and the ways
وَلَقَدand indeed أَضاءَlit up لَكَfor you الطَريقُthe road وَأَنهَجَتand became clear
سُبُلُpaths المَسالِكِthe routes وَالهُدىand guidance يُعديlends aid
Indeed, the road has lit up for you, and clear now are
To the roads and guidance spread for you.
the paths of passage; guidance lends aid.
