وَراجَعَنيand returned to me مِنthrough ذِكرِremembrance of ماwhat قَدalready مَضىhad passed حُبّيmy love
The tears of both eyes flowed in a steady, pouring rain.
With tears flowing, my eyes were occupied with grief
And my love returned to me through remembrance of what had passed.
And memories of past love returned to haunt me
وَأَبدىand revealed الهَوىpassion ماwhat كُنتُI used to أُخفيhide مِنَfrom العِدىthe enemies

And passion revealed what I used to hide from enemies.
Passion revealed what malice I used to hide
And once my heart yearned at the recollection of youth.
And my heart wavered, recalling the days of youth

Whenever the man near death is released, if people have arrayed themselves
When will the healer be sent? For people have become
as watchful eyes around Medina's outskirts and then the rocky hills,
Eyes for the outskirts of the city and the hills

I die of grief or waste away until there comes to my aid
I will die thirsty or lean until
a rescuer with a gift from their bounty or with nearness.
A helper quenches me with news or nearness of them

The circling, thirsty one leaned toward her, and set loose
I pine, like a camel moaning for them, but
were hearts, yet they cannot drink from her.
Hearts cannot attain what they crave to drink

They made love a sickness for us, though we had
Passion has become an ailment plaguing us
no fault against them when they led us into sickness.
As they made us ill through no fault or sin

Youth's splendor flowed over her, and she experienced
The glory of youth flowed over them as they enjoyed
the delights of nights and the ease of plenty.
The bliss of nights and prosperity from fertility

Delicate women, who desire no union with a clumsy fellow,
Beauties who do not yearn for the embrace of an admirer
a sluggish fool, nor disdain a charming, sweet-natured man.
Or disdain the sweet glance of a gentle gazelle
