أَلَهفَO anguish! أَبيmy father's لَمّاwhen أَدَمتُI sustained لَكِfor you (feminine) الهَوىlove
وَأَصفَيتُكِand I sincerely gave you (feminine) الوُدَّaffection الَّذيwhich هُوَit is ظاهِرُmanifest
O my father's anguish, when I kept my love for you alive,
And gave you pure affection, plain to see,
وَجاهَرتُand I spoke openly to فيكِabout you (feminine) الناسَthe people حَتّىuntil أَضَرَّcaused harm بيto me
مُجاهَرَتيmy speaking openly to القَومَthe people الَّذينَwhom أُجاهِرُI address openly
And spoke openly to people about you, until it harmed me—
My speaking openly to the people I address so openly.
وَأَنتِand you (feminine) كَفَيءِlike the shade of الغُصنِthe bough بَيناًwhile يُظِلُّنيit shades me
وَيُعجِبُنيand it delights me إِذwhen suddenly زَعزَعَتهُshook it الأَعاصِرُthe whirlwinds
And you are like a bough's shade: while it sheltered me
And delighted me, suddenly the whirlwinds shook it;
فَصارَso became لِغَيريsomeone else's ظِلُّهُits shade وَهَواؤُهُand its breeze
وَدارَتand circled بِجِسميaround my body بَعدَafter ذاكَthat الهَواجِرُthe scorching midday heats
So its shade and breeze became another's,
And after that the noonday heats encircled my body.
