وَفِتيانٍand young men شَوَيتُI roasted لَهُمfor them شِواءًroast meat
وَفِتيانٍ شَوَيتُ لَهُم شِواءً
سَريعَquick الشَيِّthe roasting كُنتُI was بِهِat it نَجيحاsuccessful
سَريعَ الشَيِّ كُنتُ بِهِ نَجيحا
And for young men I roasted meat,
quick to cook; at this I was adept.
فَطَرتُthen I darted بِمَنصِليwith my blade فيamong يَعمُلاتٍswift she-camels
فَطَرتُ بِمَنصِلي في يَعمُلاتٍ
دَواميbleeding الأَيدِthe forefeet يَخبُطنَthey pound السَريحاthe leather foot-bindings
دَوامي الأَيدِ يَخبُطنَ السَريحا
Then I darted with my blade among swift she-camels,
their forefeet bleeding, pounding their leather foot-bindings.
فَقُلتُso I said لِصاحِبيto my companion لاdo not تَحبِساناdelay us
فَقُلتُ لِصاحِبي لا تَحبِسانا
بِنَزعِby uprooting أُصولِهِits roots وَاِجتَزَّand cut off شيحاwormwood
بِنَزعِ أُصولِهِ وَاِجتَزَّ شيحا
So I told my companion, 'Do not delay us
by pulling up its roots; cut off some wormwood.'
