وكمand how many منيةa wish خلفتI left خلفيbehind me وبغيةand a desire
وكم منية خلفت خلفي وبغية
ومنand of حاجneeds نفسa soul حالstood as a barrier منfrom دونهاbefore them التركthe Turks
ومن حاج نفس حال من دونها الترك
How many a wish and cherished desire I left behind me,
And how many a wish I left behind me, and a desire,
and how many a soul’s need—renunciation stood between me and it.
And needs of the soul, thwarted by the Turks.
إذاwhenever ذكرتهاit recalled them النفسthe soul حنتyearned وأرزمتand moaned
إذا ذكرتها النفس حنت وأرزمت
وودتand wished لفرطbecause of the intensity of الوجدlonging أدركهاovertook it الفتكslaughter
وودت لفرط الوجد أدركها الفتك
Whenever the soul recalled them, it yearned and gave a low moan,
Whenever the soul recalled them, it yearned and moaned,
and in the extremity of longing wished a violent death would overtake it.
And, from overwhelming longing, wished that slaughter had overtaken it.
سلامpeace علىupon تلكthose الديارabodes وقدستand may they be hallowed
سلام على تلك الديار وقدست
نفوسsouls بمثواهاin their dwelling ثوىdwelt العلمlearning والنسكand devotion
نفوس بمثواها ثوى العلم والنسك
Peace upon those abodes, toward which made their way
Peace upon those abodes, and hallowed be
souls; in that resting place dwelt learning and piety.
Souls in whose dwelling learning and devotion dwelt.
