Is this Lebanon, or the mountains of Spain?
Is this Lebanon or the mountains of Spain?
Or has longing for homelands rekindled hopes?
Or is it yearning for homelands that revived desires?

And oh, the brightness of days followed by pitch-dark nights
O white days followed by temples,
That overtook our two lands, the distant and the near!
You have brought our destiny from afar and near.

The Umayyads came to Damascus,
Flourishing, its open country surpassing the settlements.
With its valleys more splendid than songs.

And the owls' hooting brought the buildings down.
And the owl cried over your ruined dwellings.

And they headed for lands that Tariq had explored earlier;
They populated lands that Tariq had raided,
Through them it was humbled for one night, and mighty for eight,
In a night that humiliated and honored eight.

Until God decreed the sundering of their unity.
Until God ordained the scattering of their unity,
So they returned as they had come, innocent and guilty alike.
And they returned as they came, innocent and guilty.
