مَن شابَ قد ماتَ وهو حيٌّ

مَن شابَ قد ماتَ وهو حيٌّ

يَمشي على الأرضِ مشيَ هالكْ

يَمشي على الأرضِ مشيَ هالكْ

Whoever has turned gray has already died while still alive.

He who grows grey has died whilst still alive,

He walks upon the earth with a dead man's gait.

He walks upon the earth with faltering steps.

لو كان عمرُ الفتى حساباً

لو كان عمرُ الفتى حساباً

لكانَ في شيبهِ فذلكْ

لكانَ في شيبهِ فذلكْ

If a young man's lifespan were an account,

If a youth's age were but a sum of years,

Its final tally would lie in his gray hair.

Then aged men would never stoop like this.
