O seeker of grammar, take heed—then weep for it,

    after Abu Amr and Hammad,

and Ibn Abi Ishaq, in his learning,

and the adornment of the assembly and the gathering—

Isa, and others like Isa—and will

    any age bring their equals?

Far from it—save one who says of them:

They anchored its foundation with stakes.

    So he follows their path,

and does not deny their merit.

And do not forget Yunus the grammarian,

nor Khalil, the serpent of the valley.

And say to whoever seeks knowledge: take heed—

cry out from the highest eminence, cry out:

Alas for grammar's loss! With it, the elusive

Anqa has perished, she of lofty ascents.

Some people ruined it and demeaned it,

    amid gain-seeking and scoundrels,

men of wrangling and men of faulty speech,

    of ignoble fathers and grandfathers.

They have an analogy they themselves devised,

a faulty analogy that does not conform.

So in grammar, even if they lived

the lifespans of Ad, they would still be at Abu Jad—the ABCs.

As for al-Kisa'i, he is a man

in grammar, a chanting camel-driver, making no progress.

And he, to whoever comes to him not knowing him,

is like a mirage in the desert wastes to the thirsty.
