وآنستني حتى أنسيتُ بقُربهِ

فلما رأى أنسي بهِ باعَدَ القربا

He made me feel at home until I grew at home in his nearness;

And you put me at ease until his nearness made me forget.

but when he saw how at ease I was with him, he set that closeness far away.

Then, when he saw my ease with him, he pushed closeness away.

ونولَني نَيلاً فلما قبلتُهُ

جَفَاني كأنِّي نلتُ ما نلتُهُ غصبا

He bestowed a gift upon me, and when I accepted it,

And he granted me a gift, but when I accepted it,

he shunned me, as though I had seized what I received by force.

He shunned me, as though I had gained what I gained by force.

ورغبَنِي في فََضلِهِ فَالتَمستُه

ورغبَنِي في فََضلِهِ فَالتَمستُه

فصارَ التماسِي فَضلهَ عِندَهُ ذنبا

فصارَ التماسِي فَضلهَ عِندَهُ ذنبا

He made me long for his bounty, so I sought it;

And he made me eager for his bounty, so I sought it;

then, in his eyes, my seeking his bounty became a sin.

So my seeking his bounty became a sin in his eyes.
