إذا المرء لم يسعد على الدهر جده

إذا المرء لم يسعد على الدهر جده

وإن كان ذا عقلٍ يقال مفند

وإن كان ذا عقلٍ يقال مفند

If a man's fortune does not favor him against time,

If a man does not find fortune in this life

even if he is wise, he is called a fool.

Though he be wise, he is called confused

ويا رب محظور عليه رايته

ويا رب محظور عليه رايته

تناول ما أعيا الذي هو أوحد

تناول ما أعيا الذي هو أوحد

And many a man under restriction have I seen

O Lord, if he is deprived of achieving his hopes

attain what baffled a man without equal.

He takes what tires him, for that is all he can do
