    لَكِنَّما تَتَخالَفُ الأَعمالُ

    People are one creation, alike;

    but their deeds differ.

    أَيُّ اِمرِئٍ إِلّا وَفيهِ مَقالُ

    Truth and falsehood are spoken of men;

    what man is there but something is said of him?

    And everyone has, within himself,

    faults enough to distract him from others.

    He finds another's slight failings burdensome,

    yet mountains of the same weigh upon him.

    And he sleeps, heedless of his world, the sleep of one content

    with his world's delights—and that is an illusion.

    And I saw the tongues of men as vipers,

    sometimes raging, and sometimes killing by stealth.

    So if you escape malicious talk, whatever else

    you reap, then you are the most fortunate, the generous one.
