وَلمّاand when رَأَيتُI saw الشَربَthe drinkers أَكدَتwithheld rain سَماؤُهُمtheir sky
I tucked under my arm زِقّيmy wineskin وَاِحتَسَبتُand sought reward for عَنائيmy toil
And when I saw that the drinkers' sky had withheld its rain,
I tucked my wineskin under my arm and bore my toil in hope of reward.
فَلَمّاthen when أَتَيتُI reached الحانَthe tavern نادَيتُI called رَبَّهُits master
فَثابَso he came خَفيفَlight الروحِof spirit نَحوَtoward نِدائيmy call
Then, when I reached the tavern, I called its master,
So he came, light of spirit, toward my call,
قَليلَlittle هَجوعِsleep العَينِof the eye إِلّاexcept تَعِلَّةًa brief respite
عَلىin وَجَلٍfear مِنّيof me وَمِنand of نُظَرائيothers like me
His eye knowing little sleep, save a brief respite,
In fear of me and of others like me.
فَقُلتُso I said أَذِقنيهاlet me taste it فَلَمّاthen when أَذاقَهاhe let me taste it
طَرَحتُI cast عَلَيهِupon him رَيطَتيmy wrap وَرِدائيand my cloak
So I said, 'Let me taste it'; then, when he let me taste it,
I cast upon him my wrap and my cloak.
وَقُلتُand I said أَعِرنيlend me بَذلَةًan everyday garment أَستَتَرI may cover myself بِهاwith it
بَذَلتُI pledged لَهُto him فيهاfor it طَلاقَthe divorce of نِسائيmy wives
And I said, 'Lend me an everyday garment to cover myself with.'
For it, I pledged him the divorce of my wives.
فَوَاللَهِso, by God ماnot بَرَّتwas fulfilled يَمينيmy oath وَلاnor وَفَتkept faith
لَهُwith him غَيرَexcept أَنّيthat I ضامِنٌa guarantor بِوفائيof my keeping faith
So, by God, my oath was not fulfilled, nor did it keep faith
With him—yet I guarantee that I shall keep faith.
فَأُبتُso I returned إِلىto صَحبيmy companions وَلَمand not أَكُI was آيِباًone returning
فَكُلٌّthen each one يُفَدّينيoffers to ransom me وَحُقَّand was deserved فِدائيmy ransom
So I returned to my companions, though I was not one to return;
Then each offered to ransom me—and I deserved to be ransomed.
