When will the days let my tears stop flowing,
And my tormented heart cease spending nights on embers?

And will they ever make me forget the calamities gone by,
At which hard, unyielding rock would melt?

God will not let me forget—and how could I, when in my blood
Khansa's sorrows for Sakhr have mingled?

My heart has grown used to sorrow since its earliest years,
And has never known the taste of joy in life.

Oh, would that all of me were tongues composing elegies,
To voice the sorrows of a heart bereft of patience.

تمرُّ لياليها أَمرَّ من الصبرِ
I find death sweeter than a sorrowful life
Whose nights pass, bitterer than aloes.

Though the tears from my eyes dry for a moment,
Yet in my heart, flowing tears run on forever.

Parting's snatcher took a pearl from me,
Of wondrous beauty, putting the radiant star to shame.

Treacherous time has slain her—would that
It had slain me instead of her; but it did the reverse.

You departed from me, O Rachel, so swiftly,
And kindled fires of ghada wood within my breast.

A little branch the hand of parting met and broke.

And yours is not just one grave, for our hearts
Are graves holding likenesses of your form in the tomb.
