Rose blossoms we plucked with our eyes,

And the fragrance of roses we inhaled with our thoughts.

And a rose bore fruit in the heart when planted,

Though I have never seen a rose bring forth fruit.

She has indeed risen in stature among humankind—no wonder,

For the rose among humankind is sovereign of flowers.

    فالطرفُ في جنةٍ والقلبُ في نارِ

    She presented me with a garden of her blossoms;

So the eye is in paradise, and the heart in fire.

A letter dazzling in beauty, which has engraved

Affection in my heart, leaving its traces.

So we care not if our bodies are far apart,

While our hearts are close, dwelling in one home.

O you who took pains to praise me—praise is measured by

Its author's worth, in every arena.

You are not the first night traveler beguiled by a moon,

Nor am I the first full moon to mislead a night traveler.

Between you and me, there is kinship in our names,

But between us lies a difference in rank.

And the eglantine, a kind of rose, resembles it

To the eye, yet is bereft of its fragrance.
