أَعينايَO my two eyes جُوديpour generously بالدموعwith tears السواكبِstreaming
وفيضيand overflow دماءًblood بعدafter فقدthe loss of الحبائبِloved ones
O my eyes, pour forth streaming tears,
My eyes weep stars,
And overflow with blood after the loss of loved ones.
And my outpour is blood after losing loved ones,
لعلَّكِperhaps you تطفىquench بعضَsome of ماwhat خَامرَhas pervaded الحشَىthe inmost heart
منof النارthe fire أوor تشفيheal جراحthe wounds of النَوادبِmourning women
Perhaps you may quench some of what has seized my heart—
Perhaps it extinguishes some of the fire that stirred my chest,
The fire—or heal the wounds of mourning women.
Or heals the wounds of parting.
طَوَىfolded away الدهرtime ماwhat بينيbetween me وبينand between احبَّتيmy loved ones
وجمَّعand gathered together ماwhat بينيbetween me وبينand between المصائبِcalamities
Time has folded away the ties between me and my loved ones,
Time has folded what was between me and my loved ones,
And brought me together with calamities.
And gathered what was between me and tribulations.
تتابعَتcame in succession الأَرزآءُmisfortunes منfrom كلّevery جانبٍside
عليَّupon me كماjust as ينهلُّpours down غيثthe rain of السحائبِthe clouds
Misfortunes have followed one another from every side
Afflictions poured upon me from all sides,
Upon me, as rain pours down from the clouds.
As heavy rain pours from the clouds.
ولوand if كانthere were همٌّa sorrow واحدٌone لاحتملتهُI would have borne it
And were it but one sorrow, I would have borne it,
Had it been one worry, I could have endured it,
But these sorrows have baffled all who would count them.
But worries have overwhelmed every reckoner.
شقيقيَmy full brother عبدservant of اللهGod أَنّىhow تركتنيyou left me
بقلبٍwith a heart جريحٍwounded منfrom فراقِكَseparation from you ذائبِmelting
My brother Abdullah, how could you leave me
My brother Abdullah, how could you leave me
With a wounded heart, melting from parting with you?
With a heart wounded by parting from you.
أَياO غصنَbranch of بانٍa bān tree قدindeed بَغَىsought البينseparation كسرَهُto break it
وياand O قمراًmoon أخفَتهُhid it سحبclouds of النوائبِcalamities
O branch of a bān tree, which separation has sought to break,
O branch of Bān, separation wanted to break you,
And O moon hidden by clouds of calamity,
And O moon, the clouds of affliction hid you.
وياand O كوكباًstar قدindeed غابvanished عَنيfrom me فيin الثَرَىthe earth
وماand not هكَذَاlike this عهديmy experience of غيابthe disappearance of الكواكبِstars
And O star that has vanished from me into the earth,
O star that disappeared from me into the ground,
Yet never have I known stars to vanish this way.
Not so did I know the disappearance of stars.
لئنeven if غبتَyou have vanished عنfrom عينيmy eye فشخصُكَyet your form لمhas not يزلceased
أَماميbefore me فيwithin طيّthe folds of الحَشَىthe inmost heart والترائبِand the chest bones
Though you have vanished from my sight, your form remains
If you are absent from my eyes, your image still remains
Before me, within the folds of my heart and ribs.
Before me, folding my chest and disturbing me.
وقدand indeed كنتُI was أَرجوhoping أنto أَرَىsee لكَfor you عودةًa return
فخابso was dashed رجائيmy hope فيكَمنin you; from كلevery جانبِside
And I had hoped to see you return,
I had hoped to see your return,
But my hope for you was dashed on every side.
But my hope in you was thwarted from all sides.
فياso O دمعَtears of عينيmy eye لاdo not تجفَّdry up منfrom البكاweeping
وياand O جدمرَprobably an ember (text unclear) قلبيmy heart لاnever برَحتَyou cease to be مُصَاحبيmy companion
So, O tears of my eye, never run dry of weeping,
O tear of my eye, do not dry from weeping,
And O ember of my heart, may you never cease to be my companion.
And O my burning heart, you did not stop accompanying me.
سَلاَمٌpeace علىupon ذاكَthat الضريحِtomb وَرَحمةٌand mercy
تفيضُoverflows عليهِover it كالغيوثِlike rains السَواكبِstreaming
Peace be upon that tomb, and mercy
Peace be upon that tomb, and mercy
Pouring over it like streaming rains.
Pouring upon it like pouring rain.
I will weep for you دهريall my life ماas long as حَييتُI live وأنand if أَمُتI die
ستبكيwill weep عظَاميmy bones تَحتَbeneath طيّthe folds of الترائبِthe chest bones
I shall weep for you all my days, as long as I live; and if I die,
I shall weep for you as long as I live, and when I die,
My bones will weep beneath the folds of my ribs.
My bones beneath the sand will weep for you.
