لا في المعاني أَنتِ فوقَ مراتبي

Between you and me there is a kinship in names,

Between you and me in the heavens is a relation

Not in meaning—you stand above my station.

But in meanings you are above my status

سُمِّيتِ كاتبةً بكلِّ لياقةٍ

سُمِّيتِ كاتبةً بكلِّ لياقةٍ

وأنا كما تدرينَ بنتُ الكاتب

وأنا كما تدرينَ بنتُ الكاتب

You were called a writer, most fittingly,

You are rightly called a writer in every aspect

And I, as you know, am the writer’s daughter.
