Al-Khalil composed for us a book containing
The Khaleel composed a book for us
The blossoms of the hills, from which the wilderness grows fragrant,
In it the blossom of youth exudes fragrance
منfrom كلِّevery قافيةٍrhyme نراهاwe see it سُكَّراًsugar

From every rhyme that we behold as sugar;
From every rhyme we see it sugared
Then, when we hear it, we find it intoxicating.
So when we hear it, it intoxicates us
فيin فكرهِhis mind نارُthe fire الخليلِof Al-Khalil توقدتblazed
فبدتand appeared لناto us فيin الشعرِpoetry منهاfrom it أَبحُرُseas (poetic meters)
In his mind, the fire of Al-Khalil blazed,
In his mind Al-Khaleel's fire was kindled
And from it seas appeared to us in verse.
So there appeared to us in his poetry seas
أهدتbestowed لناupon us تلكَthose البحورُthe seas (poetic meters) جواهراًjewels
وكذاand likewise البحورُthe seas يجىءُcomes منهاfrom them الجوهرُjewels
Those seas bestowed jewels upon us,
Those seas brought us gems
And likewise, jewels come from the seas.
And so from the seas comes essence
