For there is no affection between me and you.

Between us there was affection

تعيبُ أمانتي وتذُّم أهلي

تعيبُ أمانتي وتذُّم أهلي

وتأكلني إلى حضرٍ وباد

وتأكلني إلى حضرٍ وباد

You impugn my trustworthiness and disparage my family,

You blame my trustworthiness and slander my people

and devour me with slander before townsfolk and nomads.

And backbite me to city and wilderness alike

فأيّاً ما وأيّ كان أبلغي

فأيّاً ما وأيّ كان أبلغي

وأسعى في العشيرة بالفساد

وأسعى في العشيرة بالفساد

So whichever one was more effective [wording uncertain],

However much you convey

and more active in spreading corruption within the clan—

And spread corruption through the tribe

فلا لاقى سروراً من مليك

فلا لاقى سروراً من مليك

ولا زالت يداه في صفادِ

ولا زالت يداه في صفادِ

then may he find no joy from a sovereign,

You will not find joy from a king

and may his hands never cease to be in fetters.

Nor will his hands cease from shackles
