Whenever a breeze blows from Furuq,
Whenever a breeze blew from the heights
It makes longing blaze fiercely in my breast.
Passion stirred in the arid wilderness

If reproach were of any use with fortune,
If reproach could change fate
I would have heaped reproaches upon it on your account.
I would have reproached you abundantly

We are in a town devoid of clear weather;
We are in a cheerless town
We see nothing in the sky but clouds.
Seeing naught in the sky but clouds

Its stars have hidden themselves in its darkness,
Its stars hidden in its gloom
And your brother—Ruin—has vanished on the horizon.
While your brother doom looms on the horizon

There is no garden there, nor any nightingale,
No gardens here, nor nightingales
Yet we have heard the crow there.
Only crows we hear cawing

You sway along over the mire, and we take shelter
Wandering among the sand dunes
In houses you would take for domes.
Towards houses like domed tombs

We see nothing in spring but dust.
Naught we see in spring but dust

How my soul grieves for nights gone by,
My soul yearns for nights now past
When the days of serenity were tender and sweet.
When the pact of joy was sweet

Dawn has broken after endless dark
I know not when it will turn to reunion.
I know not when light will draw near

O brother in affection, what keeps you from us,
O brother beloved, what keeps you from me
While a calamity of fate has befallen us?
When fate assails me like a foe

If this is estrangement, your judgment is too noble
If aloofness is your choice
For us to shun our friends when far apart.
I must accept estrangement from a friend

Recall me, for none forget like you
When you read this letter there.
When you recite this poem there
